Nigeria and Chelsea player, Victor Moses has been named Goal Africa Player of the Year for 2017, a reward for his exploits for club and country this year.
The 26-year-old player who was an integral member of Chelsea’s 2016-2017 Premier League-winning team under coach, Antonio Conte, won the award ahead of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon and Borussia Dortmund), Naby Keita(Guinea and RB Leipzig), Sadio Mane (Senegal and Liverpool), and Mohamed Salah (Egypt and Liverpool).
After years of loan moves, Moses finally cemented his role at Stamford Bridge under Antonio Conte, making his first league start for the Blues in over three years October 1, 2016, against Hull City in a 3-4-3 system, which he played an unfamiliar right wing-back role.
The Nigerian had 22 consecutive league starts for Chelsea after the Hull City victory until he briefly succumbed to injury.
Apart from winning the Premier League, Moses also received an FA Cup runners-up medal after Chelsea lost to Arsenal in a final where the Nigerian tinged his successful campaign with a red card.
Moses played only three internationals this year, but in his first, he scored in a sensational 4-0 destruction of Cameroon that knocked the African champions out of qualifying and smoothed Nigeria’s eventual passage to a third straight World Cup.
Moses, made the five-man shortlist for BBC African Footballer of the Year 2017 which was won by Mohamed Salah and also made the 11-man shortlist for CAF’s African Footballer of the Year award.
