The Kogi government has been dragged to court by an indigene of the state
- Sheyi Babaeko sued the government to court over their decision to provide cattle colonies as land for herdsmen

The Kogi government has been dragged to court by an indigene of the state over its decision to provide cattle colonies as land for herdsmen.
According NAIJ the case was instituted by Sheyi Babaeko, an aspirant for the Kogi state House of Assembly in the 2019 elections.
Joined in the suit is the Kogi state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello as well as the commissioners of justice and lands in the state.
In the lawsuit number HCH/08/2018, the plaintiff alleged that cattle grazing and colonies are private businesses and does not fall under the public interest of the citizens of Kogi state. It also seeks to find out if the governor indeed has the power to compulsorily acquire land for herdsmen.
The government has been given 42 days to respond to the summons.
Governor Bello had agreed to make Kogi state pioneer the federal government's planned cattle colonies, saying it will be in the best interest of the people.
In a statement on via his press secretary, Petra Onyegbule, the governor said there were benefits of the colonies, adding that the project will be financed by the federal government, even as he stressed that t was fair for states to also contribute to the project.
“To ensure that everyone is carried along in this process, Kogi state, through the ministry of agriculture, will soon be embarking on a series of stakeholders’ engagement to sensitise the people, farmers, cattle breeders and other stakeholders on the implementation of the new policy,” the statement said.
