Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, representing Delta Central senatorial district, has emerged the Deputy Senate President of the ninth National Assembly.
Senator Omo-Agege, elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was inaugurated as the Deputy Senate President after winning the leadership election contest on the floor of the upper chamber on Tuesday.
The Edo federal lawmaker polled 68 votes to defeat another APC lawmaker, Senator Ike Ekweremadu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), representing Enugu West senatorial district, who garnered 37 votes.
The result of the election was declared by Mohammed Sani-Omolori, the Clerk of the National Assembly and presiding officer for the election.
Senator Omo-Agege was endorsed by the APC as its preferred candidate to emerge as the deputy head of the upper chamber.
A total number of 106 out of 109 senators took part in the election, with the lawmaker representing Imo West senatorial district not present due to litigation issues with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and another lawmaker whose name was not announced.
However, Senator Ali Ndume, who was defeated in the Senate President election, abstained from voting, while there was an invalid vote.
