Just in: Federal University,Oye Ekiti Shut Indefinitely After Students' Bloody Protest 

The authorities of the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) have announced the immediate and indefinite closure of the university following the protest embarked upon by students of the university in Oye-Ekiti on Tuesday evening, which turned violent leaving in its trails vandalisation of properties and bloodshed.

Wife of the Governor of Ekiti State, Mrs. Bisi Fayemi, who was on tour of council areas in the state, reportedly escaped being attacked by the protesters as they smashed all the vehicles in her convoy.

Sources at Oye Ekiti alleged that no fewer than two persons were feared killed in the course of the protest.

A statement released this night by the vice chancellor of the institution and made available to journalists, reads;

”Following the unfortunate incident acted out by some youths in Oye Ekiti earlier today, the authorities of the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) hereby announces the immediate and indefinite closure of the university to forestall further breakdown of law and order. 

In the same vein, the students union of the institution is disbanded indefinitely. 

Following this closure, the students population are hereby ordered to vacate the university premises no later than 10am tomorrow 11th September 2019.

Further developments will be communicated in due course.”

According to eyewitnesses, the students who had been aggrieved over poor power situation in the two campuses of the university and the host communities, got hint of the presence of the governor’s wife, as she was said to have been to two other council areas earlier.

Sources said that the protesters, armed with sticks and stones, attacked unsuspecting commuters and when the convoy of the governor’s wife arrived, they hurled stones at the vehicles.

The governor’s wife was reportedly whisked away from the scene in a commando-like manner, while others in her convoy scampered to safety.

However, some people, including journalists in the First Lady’s convoy, were injured in the attack.

Sources alleged that the protesters, which comprised students, hoodlums and commercial bike operators, torched a Police van and reportedly seized two rifles from policemen.

Reacting, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti Command, Mr. Caleb Ikechukwu, who confirmed the attack on the governor’s wife, debunked reports that two persons were killed in the protest.

Ikechukwu said, “Nobody was killed. There was no loss of life.
