Obong of Calabar Tussle: Group Calls on NJC to Intervene

A faction in the ongoing Obong of Calabar tussle has called on the Nigerian Judicial Council (NJC) to intervene in the case, citing contempt of court by the defendant, Etubom Ekpo Abasi Otu. The group is urging Etubom Ekpo Abasi Otu to desist from hosting the forthcoming Utomo Obong Festival, pending the resolution of the case ¹.

The festival, scheduled to take place soon, has the Executive Governor of Cross River State as Chief Host, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong as Chairman of the Occasion, and the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, as the guest of honor.

The case, HC/278/2023, is currently before Hon. Justice Elias O. Abua at High Court 4 in Calabar. The court had previously rescheduled its ruling on the interlocutory application filed by the claimants.

The group's call on the NJC highlights the need for the judiciary to intervene and ensure that the rule of law is upheld. As public office holders, the Governor, Senator Ekpenyong, and Senator Akpabio are sworn to protect the rule of law and the judicial system.

The Obong of Calabar tussle has been a longstanding issue, with various factions vying for the throne. The NJC's intervention is crucial in ensuring that the defendant does not disregard the court's proceedings.
